Saint Gertrude, The Patron Saint of Cats
March 17, 2026George, 27: A Life of Love

Before the interview, meet George—a truly remarkable cat and the oldest ever to take part in our photo contest at 27 years old. Rescued at the age of eight after the passing of his elderly owner, George went on to live a life full of love and care with Sharon. In this interview, she shares his story and the special bond they built over the years.
Interviewer: Sharon, can you tell us how George came into your life?
Sharon: George came to me when he was about 8 years old. He had been rescued from a shelter after his previous owner, an elderly man, sadly passed away at home. From what I understand—and from George’s behavior even now—I truly believe he tried to wake his owner before help arrived. That instinct to watch over someone he loves has never left him.
Interviewer: What makes you think that?
Sharon: Even to this day, if I’m asleep, George will come and sit right by my head. He’ll gently paw at me or put his face close to mine and meow until I open my eyes. It’s like he needs to make sure I’m okay. It’s incredibly touching—and a little persistent, too.
Interviewer: How would you describe George’s life before and after coming to you?
Sharon: His story is actually pretty simple. I believe he had a good life before, and I know he’s had a great life with me. He’s been living the ultimate cat dream—spoiled, comfortable, and very, very loved.
Interviewer: George has reached an incredible age. What has that journey been like?
Sharon: He’s 27 now, which still amazes me. Every single year feels like a gift. I honestly don’t know how much time we have left together, so I cherish every moment. And yet, year after year, he surprises me by still being here. He’s truly something special.
Interviewer: What would you say defines George?
Sharon: His loyalty, his resilience, and his love. He’s been through loss, found a new home, and spent nearly two decades filling it with companionship and warmth. He’s not just a cat—he’s family.
