Do cats recognize their names?

Cats are notorious for their indifference to humans: most of us cat lovers know very well how readily they ignore us when we call them. But a new study indicates domestic cats do recognize their own names—even if they walk away when they hear them.

Behavioral scientists confirm that cats can recognize their owner’s voice and respond to their own names.

Researchers have also found that cats had more pronounced responses to their own names—meowing or moving their ears, heads or tails—than to similar words or other cats’ names.

The study reveals that many cats react to their own names when spoken by their owners and not by a stranger. It also suggests that there is no clear evidence that cats have the ability to recognize themselves, like we humans do.

Still, it may be possible to teach cats to recognize other words not just their names. Whether that could allow humans to train their cats to respond to commands is a different story.

It seems cats are great at learning but they’re just not too keen to show their owners what they’ve learned.
