February 14, 2023Is costume play harmful for your cat?
If you’ve ever wondered whether or not your cat would tolerate being dressed up, you’re not the only one.
When it’s done respectfully, carefully, and safely, your cat might even enjoy it!
But first, safety!
Make sure the costume has no strings or any other material that could get tangled up, or that your cat could chew and choke.
Make sure it has a loose fit. The garment should neither be too tight nor too small.
Your cat MUST be able to breath, see, communicate, eat, drink, move, jump, sleep and use the litterbox whenever he/she feels the need to.

Allow your cat to get used to the smell and look of the costume. Let them get familiar with it and trust it as something harmless before they put it on.
NEVER force your cat into the costume! Positive reinforcement, treats, and a calm, soothing voice will win major points.
Once your cat is dressed up, play with your cat and offer treats to distract them from the costume.
If you are dressing up your cat for a photo contest, take your pictures quickly! You never know how long a cat may tolerate some clothing or new gear.
