Famous American musician Billy Joel, also a well-known animal lover, was delighted to support the building of two Billy Joel – themed catrooms that function as a Feline Adoption Center at North Shore Animal League America, the largest no-kill shelter in New York City.
The Piano Man’s Room has been creatively designed to be safe-haven for rescue cats and kittens and also a place to have lots of fun!
Cats are extremely sensitive to changes in their environments, territory distinctions are fundamental for them to have a sense of security in their living space and that’s why cat scratching boards and pads are a must in any catroom!
Classic Fender amps rebranded as ‘Feline’ with scratch pads on each side of their openings can be found in this amazing room.
As we continue our tour around the Piano Man’s Room, we find a fun runway underneath a musical chord…
and to complete the Piano Man’s Room decoration, a black and white photo portrait of Billy Joel himself.

A kitty-scaled Manhattan
The second room is inspired by Billy Joel’s famous song “New York State of Mind” and is filled with kitty-scaled structures that recreate some of the most iconic New York places.
The Empire State Building
An ‘Empire State Building’ playground makes the delight of playful kitties.
The cats like to hang out, relaxing by the windows of the roof deck which is connected by a runway of floating clouds to a replica of the facade of Yankee Stadium that creates a catwalk along two walls.
The Brooklyn Bridge
A recreation of the Brooklyn Bridge spans across two large windows. The bridge is equipped with suspension cables to add extra fun for the kitties.
NYC Subway
Kitty-scaled subway cars are lined with ads and sisal-wrapped subway poles to entertain the mischievous feline “commuters”; a very clever “Next Stop Is Your Furever Home” headlines the subway car doors!
The railway track running underneath the subway cars adds another frisky touch that keeps those small felines happy and entertained.

The Billy Joel themed catrooms were designed by Mario Arbore at Squarepaws and in October 2019, North Shore Animal League America held a private ribbon-cutting event to unveil the finished project.
Since then, hundreds of rescue cats and kittens have enjoyed the warmth and safety of this amazing Feline Adoption Center.
