A Latvian lady drives to Ukraine everyday to rescue homeless cats

Rasma is a Latvian volunteer who is rescuing homeless cats and dogs in Ukraine and taking them across the border into Poland and Latvia until the war is over.

At the Home for Rescued Animals in Lviv, she could be seen loading up three vans with the first batch of dogs and cats.

Many homeless cats handed over by refugees or left abandoned in the streets wait for their evacuation at an animal shelter in Lviv, while Rasma with a crew of volunteers from Latvia as well are working tirelessly to take them across the border and give them shelter in their country.

Rasma couldn’t have remained in Latvia and done nothing, she said. “If I have an opportunity, if I have a large van, if I can bring food here and take some animals back to safety, I can’t stay at home.”

Thousands of internally displaced people fleeing the violence in Ukraine pass through the Lviv animal sanctuary on a daily basis to surrender their pets.

The sanctuary had to deal with hundreds of pets as well as other animals such as foxes and storks, since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24th,2022.
