Anne Frank, a brave young cat lady

Many people know the amazing story of Anne Frank and what a brave young girl she was but what many of you might not know is that she was also a devoted cat lover who, due to the circumstances, was forced to leave her beloved cat Moortje behind when she and her family had to go into hiding.

In the morning that the Franks left to go into hiding, Moortje stayed behind in their rented apartment.

The Frank family left a note for their upstairs tenant Mr. Goldschmidt to give Moortje to the neighbors to care for.

Anne insisted and fought to take Moortje into hiding with her, but her parents explained that it was impossible to take the cat.

When later on, Peter, the teenage boy hiding with them, showed up with his black cat Mouschi, Anne was sad and disappointed because she missed Moortje terribly.

“I miss Moortje every moment of the day and no one knows how often I think of her; whenever I think of her I get tears in my eyes. Moortje is such a darling and I love her so much, I dream up all sorts of plans in which she comes back again…” Anne wrote in her famous diary.
