6 benefits of being “happily owned” by a cat
September 29, 2025Cats at Ground Zero

On the anniversary of 9/11, we remember all those poor cats that were at Ground Zero during the WTC attacks in 2001, as well as those cats left alone in their apartments for days, as their owners couldn’t go back due to the chaos in the city or worse, didn’t come back at all.
In general, people didn’t give much thought to the animals who were caught up in the destruction, however, there were many beloved pets involved.
There was nothing to be found on the internet about the cats (or dogs) that were caught up in such tragedy. Many of those cats had owners who were killed during the attacks and in the aftermath and would never come home.
People living in apartments in the area who weren’t allowed back in for days after the attacks. Animals and people alike were caught up in a nightmare more horrible than one can even imagine.

The feral cats, strays, and homeless cats had to breathe in the smoke and other toxins. They had to face a world suddenly turned upside down and many did not survive.
On September 11, we remember that all life — whether that life goes on two legs or four — is precious and fragile.
We remember the men, women, and children who lost their lives that day. But we cannot forget all the pets who didn’t live to see September 12.
